Maynard Longarm Quilting — Cost & Pricing
Baby & Throw Quilt Longarming Cost: Transparent Pricing from $75
Longarming a baby or throw quilt at Maynard typically runs $75–$150, depending on size, quilting complexity, and add-ons like batting and binding. A 48×60 baby quilt with edge-to-edge quilting and customer-provided batting starts at our $75 minimum; a 60×80 throw with Hobbs batting and top binding runs around $130–$145. The final cost is driven by quilt dimensions (we charge per square inch), your choice of quilting pattern, thread color, batting type, and whether you want binding applied. We’re transparent about every line item—no hidden setup fees—and our live calculator at /longarm-quote/ lets you see your exact quote before you commit.
How the Price Is Built
Our core quilting charge is per square inch of your quilt top. Edge-to-edge (computer-aided) quilting—the most popular choice—costs $0.0275 per square inch, plus a $0.0015 per square inch handling fee. So a 3,000 sq-in throw quilt would be 3,000 × ($0.0275 + $0.0015) = $87. We also apply a $75 minimum charge, which protects you on smaller projects like baby quilts or table runners.
Thread is a one-time charge per quilt. If you provide your own, there’s no thread cost. If you’d like us to supply Glide or Superior solid thread, that’s $5; variegated runs $25; metallic is $40. Each thread color change adds $5. Most customers choose one color and keep it simple.
Batting is optional—bring your own and pay nothing, or choose from Hobbs 80/20 ($0.0035/sq-in), Bamboo Blend ($0.0048/sq-in), Poly ($0.0029/sq-in), or other premium options. We calculate batting cost on the quilt top plus a 5-inch margin on all sides, so a 60×80 quilt becomes 70×90 for batting purposes. Trimming, squaring, and binding preparation are flat fees ($5 and $25 respectively); binding service itself runs $0.10–$0.20 per perimeter inch depending on whether we bind the top only, back only, or both.
Rush orders (turnaround under one week) add a flat $60. Custom quilting patterns, special ruler work, and decorative borders cost more per square inch than edge-to-edge, reflecting the extra skill and time. Use our calculator to see the exact impact of each choice.
Worked Examples
Baby quilt (48×60), edge-to-edge, customer thread & batting
Area = 48 × 60 = 2,880 sq-in. Quilting: 2,880 × ($0.0275 + $0.0015) = $86.40. Since $86.40 > $75 minimum, charge $86.40. No thread, no batting, no binding. Total: $86.40.
Throw quilt (60×80), edge-to-edge, Hobbs 80/20, top binding only
Area = 60 × 80 = 4,800 sq-in. Perimeter = 2(60+80) = 280 in. Quilting: 4,800 × ($0.0275 + $0.0015) = $144. Batting: (60+10) × (80+10) × $0.0035 = 70 × 90 × $0.0035 = $22.05. Binding: 280 × $0.10 = $28. Trimming & prep: $5 + $25 = $30. Total: $144 + $22.05 + $28 + $30 = $224.05.
Queen quilt (90×100), custom quilting, Bamboo batting, both bindings, rush
Area = 90 × 100 = 9,000 sq-in. Perimeter = 2(90+100) = 380 in. Quilting: 9,000 × ($0.09 + $0.0015) = $819.50. Batting: (90+10) × (100+10) × $0.0048 = 100 × 110 × $0.0048 = $52.80. Binding: 380 × $0.20 = $76. Trimming & prep: $5 + $25 = $30. Rush: $60. Total: $819.50 + $52.80 + $76 + $30 + $60 = $1,038.30.
Lap quilt (58×73), special ruler work, customer batting, no binding
Area = 58 × 73 = 4,234 sq-in. Quilting: 4,234 × ($0.0675 + $0.0015) = $299.38. Trimming: $5. Total: $299.38 + $5 = $304.38.
Crib quilt (36×48), edge-to-edge, Hobbs batting, top binding
Area = 36 × 48 = 1,728 sq-in. Perimeter = 2(36+48) = 168 in. Quilting: 1,728 × ($0.0275 + $0.0015) = $50.69. Since $50.69 < $75 minimum, charge $75. Batting: (36+10) × (48+10) × $0.0035 = 46 × 58 × $0.0035 = $9.38. Binding: 168 × $0.10 = $16.80. Trimming & prep: $5 + $25 = $30. Total: $75 + $9.38 + $16.80 + $30 = $131.18.

- Quilt size (width × height in inches) — larger quilts cost more because we charge per square inch
- Quilting pattern complexity — edge-to-edge ($0.0275/sq-in) is cheapest; custom work ($0.09/sq-in) is priciest
- Batting type — Poly is most affordable ($0.0029/sq-in); Wool and blends cost more; customer-provided is free
- Thread choice — customer-provided is free; solid Glide/Superior is $5; variegated is $25; metallic is $40
- Thread color changes — each additional color adds $5
- Binding service — none is free; top-only or back-only is $0.10/perimeter inch; both sides is $0.20/inch
- Special borders, ruler work, or block masking — each adds per-square-inch charges or flat fees
- Rush order — adds $60 flat fee for turnaround under one week
- Pieced backing prep — adds $25 if we assemble your backing fabric
The $75 Minimum
We charge a $75 minimum on every quilting order. This means if your baby quilt or small throw calculates to less than $75, you’ll still pay $75—a fair trade-off for setup, threading, and handling. Once your quilt exceeds about 2,500–3,000 square inches, the per-square-inch rate usually exceeds the minimum, so the minimum becomes moot.
Ways to Keep Cost Down
- Provide your own batting and thread — saves $5–$40+ per quilt
- Choose edge-to-edge quilting over custom — $0.0275/sq-in vs. $0.09/sq-in is a huge difference
- Skip binding or do it yourself — binding service can add $30–$100 depending on perimeter
- Avoid rush orders unless essential — $60 rush fee is a significant add-on
- Combine multiple quilts in one shipment — reduces per-quilt overhead
- Plan ahead — no rush order means we can batch your quilt with others and keep costs down
- Ask about block masking only on blocks that truly need it — each block adds $5 in labor

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the cheapest way to longarm a baby quilt?
Bring your own batting and thread, choose edge-to-edge quilting, and skip binding. A 48×60 baby quilt will hit our $75 minimum charge. If you want us to supply Hobbs batting and add top binding, expect around $130–$150. Use the calculator at /longarm-quote/ to see your exact price.
Why do you charge per square inch instead of a flat rate?
Per-square-inch pricing is fair to you and to us. A 36×48 crib quilt takes far less time and thread than a 108×108 king, so you shouldn’t pay the same. Our rates reflect the actual work and materials involved.
Do I have to buy batting from you?
No. Bring your own batting and there’s no batting charge. If you’d like us to supply it, we offer Hobbs 80/20, Bamboo Blend, Poly, Wool, and premium blends at competitive rates. We calculate batting cost on your quilt top plus a 5-inch margin on all sides for safety and proper tension.
What if my quilt is smaller than 2,500 square inches?
You’ll pay our $75 minimum charge. This covers setup, threading, and handling on small projects like baby quilts, table runners, and wall hangings. Once your quilt is larger, the per-square-inch rate takes over and the minimum becomes irrelevant.
How much does binding cost?
Binding is $0.10 per perimeter inch if we bind the top only, $0.10/inch for back only, or $0.20/inch if we bind both top and back. A 60×80 quilt has a 280-inch perimeter, so top-only binding would be $28. Add $5 for trimming and $25 for binding prep.
Can I see my exact cost before I send my quilt?
Yes. Our live calculator at /longarm-quote/ lets you enter your quilt dimensions, choose your quilting style, batting, thread, and add-ons, and see the total instantly. No guessing, no surprises when your quilt arrives.
