Longarm Quilting Tip Sheet
Your Quilt Top:
- Seams pressed either to the
side or open. No excessive
fabric in seams. - No embellishments (buttons,
bells, sequins, or ribbons) You
can add those later. - Mark the top of your quilt with
a tag. - Trim any dark threads that will
show through light-colored
fabrics. - Stay-stitching is nice, but not
required… UNLESS you have a
piano-key border.
Your Thread Choice:
- Glide Thread runs best in our
Bernina Q24 longarm. - Best practice is to use the same
color thread on both top &
bottom to prevent “pokies” - Thread color is your choice
unless you would like our
professional opinion.
Your Backing:
- Backing needs to be 3” to 4”
larger on all sides than the quilt
top. This is to ensure that the
side clamps can hold onto the
backing fabric - ALWAYS leave the selvages on
the outside edges of the
backing. You should not leave
selvages on an inside seam - Pieced backings—Horizonal
seams are preferred, instead of
vertical seams. If using vertical
seams, do not choose a
directional quilt design. - Centering another quilt on the
back of your quilt top is VERY
tricky, BUT do-able. - · Wide backings (108” or larger)
are less fussy than pieced
backings.
Other Services:
- Trimming/Squaring
- Binding Services
Batting Options:
- Hobb’s 80/20 is used in the
shop. - Customer batting is always
accepted. - If using a pieced batting, please
make sure that all pieces are the
same type of batting. - Do NOT pin baste top, batting
and backing together. We layer
each section separately on the
longarm. Removing pins just
takes unnecessary time.
Your Quilt Design:
- Good theme choices are:
hobbies, floral designs, or
geometrics. - Quilting options include E2E
(Edge to Edge), Borders and
Corners, Block or motif
placement, Ruler work, or
complete Custom Design.
